I’m Shari Nielsen. I’ve been an educator for over 11 years. When I got my first teaching position out of college, I was in for the challenge of my life.

I relocated from my native Connecticut to Virginia Beach with my fiancée. I just landed a job with a rough and tumble alternative school. I remember one young man… a football star. He couldn’t read past the 4 th grade level. I flunked him and because of that, he couldn’t play ball. The arrogant Athletic Director confronted me because it was a big blow to the team.

I stuck to my guns (despite the threats) because I knew I could reach him.

Before you knew it, he was in my classroom asking for help. I couldn’t turn him down, because I know that inside every kid is a genius waiting to be released. Principle Number 1:
Independent Thinking Trumps Dependent Thinking

When it comes to helping with homework, the best thing you can do is let them do it! Just giving the answers away may take less time… but it also increases dependence.

Now that’s not to say you can’t prompt them. Routinely I relate a question to something they already know. It creates a powerful experiential connection that links their mind to a new way of solving problems.

I’ve related atomic structure to the game of basketball and pop music to open up a whole new world of understanding. It’s a dynamic method to opening up the critical thinking process.

Repetition is the mother of skill. It “burns” information into students’ memories. It takes a little time, but the process can be made less tedious.

By identifying patterns in the information and using memorization tricks, many students learn to enjoy the procedure.

Education becomes a game they can win.

Old school educators may tell you this is only a short-term learning strategy. I don’t believe that. After all, I’m sure you still remember your multiplication tables after all of these years. (At least most of them!)

According to CNN, between 1982 and 2002 there has been a 25% decline in teenage readers. Does it seem like this parallels with the growth of cable and satellite TV?
